I am amazed how easy it is to get started with all of these new(er) technologies. It took me ~3 days to go from mac newbie to AWS guru. I was apprehensive coming from the Microsoft world. There is no looking back.
I met with my buddy Jared a couple of days ago and he enlightened me on the lay of the land. We had a great conversation about current technologies and where things are headed. Some things that I am going to research given our conversation:
- Distributed computing
- Unified logs. (Kenises and Kafka)
- Functional programming
I have added these to my daily practice. I have read a bit about most of these but I haven't spent the proper time to get to know them on a personal level.
Since I am in learning mode I figured I would go whole hog. So I went out and bought a Mac Book Pro. No more windows laptop. I blame Jared. I have never really used a Mac. I did have an Apple IIc growing up, but that was a while ago :-) My brother works at Apple so I really have no excuse. Its been a while since I have used unix but I can feel the muscle memory starting to come back.
I spent some time getting my dev environment setup. I created a free EC2 instance and spent some time getting this here blog setup. I wanted to thank John Washam for the inspiration and also for some helpful configuration details.
Some technologies used in the last couple of days to create this blog.
- AWS (EC2, S3, Elastic IP, Route53)
These, my friends, are some solid technologies that are crazy easy to get started with. My how times have changed.
